What you are buying

This highlands and rainforest vacation package is two of our single places sold as one trip: three nights in Cameron Highlands, four nights at Kuala Tahan on the edge of Taman Negara, and the crossing between them. Two people sharing one room. The figure is per person and covers ground arrangements only. We do not put you on a plane, we put nobody on a ship, and getting yourself to Malaysia and home again is your own arrangement and your own cost.

Seven nights split three and four. You sleep in Tanah Rata for the first three, spend the fourth day on the road and the river, and sleep at Kuala Tahan for the last four. There is no spare day built in, because seven nights will not carry one once the crossing is paid for in hours. If you want slack, both places are sold on their own and you can take longer over either.

The crossing, and the range that causes it

Open a relief map and the problem is plain. The Titiwangsa range runs about 480 kilometers down the middle of the peninsula and works as the drainage divide: rivers on one flank run west, rivers on the other run east. There are only a handful of roads over it and none of them are quick. Tanah Rata sits high on the western flank, in a district that ranges from 800 to 1,603 meters. Kuala Tahan sits in the lowland interior on the far side, on a brown river with no road to the door.

Two ways across, both long. You can run northeast out of the district onto the Simpang Pulai to Gua Musang highway, a two lane road with climbing lanes cut for trucks and a reputation for its corners, then turn south through Kuala Lipis to Jerantut. Or you can drop east from Ringlet on the road to Sungai Koyan, about 79 kilometers of mountain, and join the same trunk road lower down. This is why we sell eleven pairs out of sixty six and turn down the rest. The other combinations put the same kind of day into a week of this length, and this one is as far as we will go.

Three nights in Cameron Highlands

You are based in Tanah Rata, the administrative town of the district, and the first thing you notice is the temperature. The mean for the year sits around 18 degrees Celsius, daytime rarely gets past 25, and at night it can fall to 9. Rooms up here often have no heating, because nobody needs it for more than a few hours, so a fleece and long trousers earn their space in the bag. The district takes over 2,700 millimeters of rain a year. That is what makes the tea grow and what keeps your boots damp for three days.

Three nights gives you a morning in the tea, clipped into rows that follow the contours of the terraced slopes; a morning in the mossy forest on Gunung Brinchang, a dripping, stunted, lichen hung wood reached by boardwalk and then rough path; and a morning on the numbered forestry trails, of which there are fourteen and which run from a stroll to a scramble with roots for handholds. Afternoons are vegetable plots, strawberry sheds and a market where most of the buyers are local people carrying cabbages. If you want nightlife or sand, these are the wrong three nights.

Four nights at Kuala Tahan

Kuala Tahan is a village on the bank opposite the park headquarters. Entry and camera permits are bought in person at a counter across the water, and that counter keeps its own hours, so the first morning has an errand in it before anything else happens. Then the walking starts: the canopy walkway, 530 meters of plank and cable strung 25 to 40 meters up, which runs to timed access because only so many people fit on it at once; Bukit Teresek, a 334 meter hill that takes a sweaty hour or so; the hides, raised boxes you sit in above a salt lick; and a guided night walk that leaves at a set hour after dark.

Be clear about the animals before you pay for any of it. Taman Negara covers over 4,300 square kilometers of forest thought to have stood for more than 130 million years, and the species list for the park runs to tigers, elephants and gaur. Almost nobody sees them. What most people carry home is insects, a few birds, enormous trunks, leeches and a great many photographs of green. A night in a hide is a night of sitting still in the dark with a strong chance that nothing walks past. We are saying it twice because visitors arrive expecting otherwise and go home flat. Come for the forest itself, the walking and the river, and treat anything with fur as an accident.

The move in the middle

Leave Tanah Rata around half past seven. The minibus takes roughly four and a half hours to Jerantut on either of the two mountain roads, both two lane, both cornering the whole way. From Jerantut it is about twenty minutes to the jetty at Kuala Tembeling, and the boat upstream leaves at 9 am and 2 pm. You are aiming at the 2 pm. Sixty kilometers of brown river later, two to three hours of it, you step off at Kuala Tahan in the late afternoon. That boat is run by a local river operator on their own schedule and their own terms. We buy you the seat, we do not run the vessel, and this office arranges no sea passage of any kind.

Now the honest part. Seven nights hold six full days, and this is one of them. You will not walk anywhere on crossing day, you will not stand in a tea garden and you will not stand on the forest floor. You will sit. If the boat is off for water levels you take the road bus from Jerantut instead, four runs a day and a little under two hours, and you land later still. The price is the three night stay and the four night stay added together. Nothing about taking them as one trip changes either number. We would rather you looked hard at that day before you booked it than after.

A licensed Malaysian minibus operator on the road legs. The boat up the Tembeling belongs to a local river operator and runs on their timetable and their terms, not ours.

Clocks that run this pair

• Minibus out of Tanah Rata: one departure, first thing, so breakfast happens before it is properly light.
• Tanah Rata to Jerantut by road: about four and a half hours on the through service, longer if the road is wet.
• River boat, Kuala Tembeling to Kuala Tahan: 9 am and 2 pm, sixty kilometers upstream, two to three hours. Run by the local river operator on their terms.
• If the river is off, the road bus from Jerantut to Kuala Tahan runs four times a day and takes a little under two hours.
• Permit counter, canopy walkway and night walk all keep set hours that the park posts at Kuala Tahan, and those hours move. We send you the ones in force for your dates rather than printing figures here that will be stale by the time you read them.

What the figure holds and what it leaves to you

A price on this site covers the ground only: the rooms, the named transfers between them, and the people who meet you. It does not cover getting to the country or leaving it.

Send us your dates. Before we quote anything firm we check them against the boat departures, the counter hours and the walkway timings, then send you a sheet with the real hours written on it. We take no payment through this site and we ask for no card details.

The months this pair holds together

The drier stretch on this side of the range usually runs February to September, and April to August is when Kuala Tahan is busiest. We do not promise you weather and will not pretend to. The highlands take more than 2,700 millimeters of rain a year and the interior is rainforest by definition. Plan on getting soaked somewhere inside the seven nights and pack for it.

Later in the year the northeast monsoon works on this coast and the Tembeling rises. When it rises far enough the boats stop running and the park shuts trails. That is the river operator's decision and the park's decision, taken on the day. Name the weeks you are weighing up and the office will send back what it actually knows, which is not the same as telling you it will be fine.

Can we run it the other way, starting in the park?

Yes, and it is the same road and the same arithmetic. The difference is the boat. The downstream run leaves Kuala Tahan in the morning, so an east to west week starts earlier and puts you into Tanah Rata after dark, at altitude, in the cold, looking for dinner. Say which direction you want when you write and we will build the sheet that way.

Why do you only sell eleven pairs?

Because of the range in the middle. Twelve places give sixty six possible combinations on paper and we sell eleven of them. The rest would drop five, six or seven hours of road into a week that holds seven nights, and you would end up paying for a bed you slept in once. This pair is the outer edge of what we will put our name to, and we print the hours before you commit rather than after you have arrived.

What are the chances of seeing a tiger or an elephant?

Low. The park is over four thousand square kilometers and the animals have plenty of room to be somewhere else, which is largely the point of a park that size. Most visitors come back with insects, birds, big trees and a lot of green. If the forest itself and the walking are the reason you are going, four nights is well spent. If a large mammal is the reason, you will probably be disappointed, and it is better to hear that from us now.
